Traveling to an unsafe country? This free service will help in case of emergency

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Planning on traveling abroad or living outside the United States? There is a free service that could lessen some anxiety and help keep you safe.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service that will email updates from the local U.S. embassy or consulate. Should an emergency take place where you are located, you’ll receive instructions on what you’ll need to do.

The program also provides real-time updates about health, weather, safety and security in the country you’re visiting, as well as information from the local U.S. embassy.

The program also allows the embassy or consulate to contact you if something was to occur, such as a natural disaster, civil unrest or a family emergency.

You’ll also receive news and updates about any country you choose, in addition to messages about short-term terrorism, health, weather or other dangerous situations.

According to the Bureau of Consular Affairs, situations in each country are evaluated every 6 to 12 months. Country advisories feature a 1 to 4 rating system, details about specific risks in the country and steps U.S. citizens should take to stay safe.

Signing up for STEP makes it easier for the U.S. embassy to reach you if there’s an emergency. Should family or friends in the U.S. try get hold of you with urgent news, the information in STEP can be used to contact you.

However, travelers are advised to always research their destination, and have alternate ways to receive safety and security information from the U.S. State Department, including social media.
