A proposal to add student housing has received board approval.

The Idaho State Board of Education approved a proposal by the University of Idaho to enter into the planning process to update its Moscow campus student housing, adding 150 beds to the facility.

A special meeting was held by the board on May 2 to vote on the proposal, which would allow U of I to spend up to $12 million on the planning and design phase alone. Currently, the university leases a 200-bed motel near the campus to help house students.

According to the State Board of Education, “the project would address deferred maintenance in several residential facilities, including enhancements to the Wallce Complex, Theopolis Tower, Elwood Apartments and expand undergraduate housing and dining.”

The university estimated the overall cost of the project to be $195 million with a three-year completion date.

Either university debt financing, development partner financing or a combination of the sources will be used to pay for the upgrades, the board stated, and a financing plan must be approved by the board before construction can begin.
