Fake Navy SEAL who appeared on TV 'ashamed' after bogus claims come to light

Fox News was forced to issue a correction after the veteran's story was exposed

A man who appeared in an interview on a major cable news network this month falsely claimed to have been a Navy SEAL who served in the Vietnam War.Fox News issued a correction and John Garofalo, who carved a glass seal he hoped to offer to President Donald Trump, apologized for the lie he kept going for years before being outed by former SEALs."It got bigger and bigger," he told Navy Times. "What I did I'm ashamed of, and I didn't mean to cause so much disgrace to the SEALs."Garofolo indeed served in the Navy from Sept. 1963 to Sept. 1967, but as an aviation boatswain's mate, not as a member of the elite special forces group. His only overseas tour was in Spain. His claims to have received nearly two dozen commendations and two Purple Hearts were also debunked.Don Shipley, a retired SEAL who regularly outs people engaging in "stolen valor," obtained records proving Garolfalo's false claims. He contacted Navy Times after Fox News failed to retract the story, though he did reach out to reporter Byan Llenas to help "turn this story around."Llenas, who originally reported the story on Oct. 8, gave an on-air apology and the network published a correction on its website Friday. The original story can no longer be found on the network's Facebook page, where it had 1.5 million views before being pulled."There are lessons to be learned from this," Llenas said. "I should have done more to verify his information. I sincerely apologize to our viewers, especially our servicemen and women."Garofalo's glass carvings are real, and he was decorated with a National Defense Service Medal, which goes to any service member who served during a "national emergency" like the Vietnam War.
